The U.S. Navy is moving forward with efforts to integrate the AGM-158C Long-Range Anti-Ship Missile (LRASM) onto the U.S. Air Force’s B-52 Stratofortress strategic bomber, with Lockheed Martin selected to undertake the work.
The Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) has issued a notice of intent to negotiate a sole-source contract with Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control on a Cost-Plus-Fixed-Fee (CPFF) basis. The proposed contract covers LRASM integration on the B-52, along with missile software updates, associated testing, test asset repairs, and failure review boards.
It is worth noting that the U.S. Air Force has already integrated the AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile (JASSM), from which LRASM was derived, into the B-52.
LRASM will add a potent weapon to the aging but highly capable platform and initiative deserves examination.
