Russia has formally protested Japan’s deployment of U.S.-made Typhon missile systems and demanded that the systems be removed from Japanese territory.
The Typhon launchers are deployed at Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Kanoya Air Base in Kagoshima Prefecture on Kyushu. They were deployed to Japan in June for the U.S.-led Valiant Shield 2026 exercise and subsequently remained in the country for the U.S.-Japan-Australia Orient Shield 2026 exercise, which ran from September 8 to 24.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Moscow delivered a formal protest note to Japan. Russian officials argued that the deployment of such systems on Japanese territory threatens Russia’s national security as well as regional peace and stability. Moscow subsequently demanded that Japan end the deployment and remove the systems from its territory, regardless of the duration or circumstances of their deployment.
Moscow had also warned that it could take what it described as “compensatory countermeasures” in response to military activity it considers threatening.

Interestingly, even China had criticized the deployment of Typhon earlier , when Zhang Xiaogang, spokesperson for China’s Defense Ministry, was asked about it at a press conference.

He had stated, “This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. At this important historical juncture, Japan should draw profound lessons from history and act with caution in the field of military security."
It’s clear that a single weapon system has irked two of the most powerful rivals of the U.S. Let’s check out the logic behind this.
