A U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor has been photographed carrying an external infrared search and track (IRST) pod beneath its wing, providing further evidence that the service is continuing to evaluate a new passive-sensing capability for the service’s oldest fifth-generation fighters. The aircraft was also covered with numerous small reference markers, suggesting that it remains engaged in developmental and flight-testing activities rather than routine operational missions.
F-22 considered to be the stealthiest operational fighter in the world remains a key asset for US Air Force, and unlike F-35 was never cleared for foreign export.
For this reason , the service is working to enhance its capabilities and IRST pod integration is a step in that direction.
A detailed examination into this is warranted.
