For much of the war, Russia’s Black Sea Fleet gradually transformed the geography of its operations in response to Ukraine’s expanding strike capabilities. The fleet’s principal base at Sevastopol in Crimea became increasingly vulnerable to Ukrainian cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, unmanned surface vessels and long-range drones. Warships that once operated routinely from Sevastopol were progressively dispersed or relocated farther east along the Black Sea coast.
Novorossiysk, on Russia’s Krasnodar coast, consequently became one of the most important sanctuaries for the surviving elements of the Black Sea Fleet.
That sanctuary has now been penetrated very strongly.
In the early hours of August 12, Ukraine conducted a large-scale combined attack against the Russian naval and port complex at Novorossiysk.
Ukraine subsequently reported that four Russian warships had been damaged.
This is pretty bad scenario for Russia and deserves examination.
