During a military drill, Taiwan for the first time, launched rockets from US supplied HIMARS in China’s direction.
The exercise was carried out near a river estuary on Taiwan’s western coastline in Taichung, an area considered a potential landing site for Chinese amphibious assault forces. The drills formed part of a broader set of defensive training activities focused on countering a potential invasion scenario. During the exercise, Taiwan launched multiple rockets from the HIMARS platform.
According to the Ministry of National Defense, forces practiced both firing missions and rapid displacement operations, with the Lockheed Martin-produced system. Following launch, HIMARS units successfully relocated to alternate firing positions within three minutes, demonstrating the system’s ability to conduct survivable “shoot-and-scoot” operations.
Army Sgt. Wang Ming-hui said, “Due to the current enemy threat, we will continue HIMARS training with unwavering determination to protect Taiwan as the nation’s strongest force.”
Military officials noted that the exercise employed reduced-range training rockets designed to impact the sea shortly after launch rather than travel deep into the Taiwan Strait.
State media outlet TaiwanPlus reported that a total of 32 rockets were launched during the drill, although four reportedly failed to fire.
The HIMARS exercise was one component of a wider series of military drills taking place along Taiwan’s western coast involving a range of missile and artillery systems intended to strengthen the island’s defensive preparedness.
