The region’s hottest summer on record is expected to cut the harvest by more than 3.5 million tonnes

Summer heat and drought have been projected to cut potato harvests in Great Britain, Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands by millions of tonnes, causing hundreds of millions of euros in losses, the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit (ECIU) reported on Thursday.

Production across the five countries is expected to be more than 3.5 million tonnes lower due to extreme weather, with the losses estimated at €498 million to €818 million ($572 million to $940 million), according to the research group.

“As one of Europe’s thirstiest crops, it was inevitable that the potato harvest would be hit hard,” ECIU land, food, and farming analyst Tom Lancaster said.

“Farmers need a stable climate in order to keep growing this staple of the European diet, without the unsustainable losses that increasingly extreme weather will bring.”

Farmers already reduced the area planted with potatoes after last year’s bumper harvest sent prices tumbling. In Germany, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, the reduction represents another 3.6 million tonnes of potential production at average yields, the ECIU said.

Potato prices have since rebounded sharply. Belgian free-market prices rose from zero in April to more than €200 a tonne; prices in Germany climbed from €15 a tonne in June to €240.

Other summer crops have also suffered, with yields expected to be up to 14% below the five-year average, according to the European Commission’s Joint Research Center.

The losses follow Europe’s hottest summer on record and come as farmers face mounting pressure from higher costs and trade competition. A 15% US tariff on most EU imports imposed last year has added to the strain.

Fuel costs have also surged following the Iran war and the disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, which carried around a quarter of global oil before the conflict. Higher diesel prices have further increased farmers’ expenses.

European farmers have repeatedly protested over rising costs, foreign competition, and proposed changes to EU agricultural funding. On Tuesday, the EU’s leading agricultural lobby, COPA-COGECA, accused Brussels of adding to the burden by removing an emergency exemption from new carbon taxes on fertilizer imports.
