The Meta boss responded to a parliamentary panel after being given a three-day deadline to do so
Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has apologized to an Indian parliamentary panel over child sexual abuse material, deepfake content, and operational errors on its platforms, government sources have told RT India.
Earlier on Wednesday, the head of a parliamentary panel, which had summoned Meta officials after Facebook temporarily blocked a video by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, had given the tech boss three days to apologize.
Meta has yet to issue a statement on the apology.
“If Facebook does not take action against those responsible in this matter, the Safe Harbour Clause will be removed,” Nishikant Dubey, a lawmaker from Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, said.
Meta’s chief of global affairs, Joel Kaplan, was also called in on Wednesday by the secretary of the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to explain the takedown.
Meta had said the incident happened due to a technical glitch.
The blocked video was of Modi addressing students who had protested in Delhi last month – a sensitive issue for the ruling BJP.
The parliamentary panel also warned all social media platforms to comply with India’s Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) rules. Meta was slapped with a notice over violations of the rules by Instagram last month.
