Mikhail Fedorov was dismissed after just six months in office in a sweeping government reshuffle

Former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov has claimed he was dismissed because reforms to overhaul military procurement and tackle entrenched interests within the ministry triggered a backlash.

Fedorov was removed by Vladimir Zelensky earlier this month after just six months in office as part of a sweeping government reshuffle. At the time, Zelensky cited tensions between the defense minister and commander-in-chief Aleksandr Syrsky, while Ukrainian media reported that disagreements over military reform lay behind the rift.

In an interview with Ukrainskaya Pravda published on Wednesday, Fedorov suggested the broader government reshuffle may have served as cover for his dismissal. He said changes to procurement rules and defense tenders had angered vested interests.

Zelensky fired defense minister to tighten grip on power – opposition leader

“Very many people surrounded the Ministry of Defense and me as minister because we started rebuilding many internal processes,” he said. The reforms had “caused great dissatisfaction” among those whose interests they affected, Fedorov added.

He also said private companies and law enforcement exerted influence over the Defense Ministry. He alleged that some department heads in the ministry had been appointed by such companies, saying his team had sought to reform the “system” rather than “fight specific people.”

Fedorov, 35, became Ukraine’s youngest-ever defense minister in January after serving as minister of digital transformation since 2019. During his six-month tenure, he deepened Kiev’s cooperation with US data-mining and military technology company Palantir while pursuing reforms at the corruption-plagued ministry. In his farewell statement following his dismissal, Fedorov acknowledged that he had failed to reform the ministry in accordance with “NATO standards.”

The Ukrainian outlet Strana, citing sources, previously suggested the government reshuffle may also have been intended to remove Fedorov, claiming Zelensky had grown dissatisfied with what it described as the minister’s “independent political game” and his ties to circles close to the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office (SAPO).

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry has repeatedly faced procurement scandals under Zelensky. Previous ministers Aleksey Reznikov and Rustem Umerov were both removed after their tenures became embroiled in allegations related to military supplies and Western-funded weapons contracts.
