More than three years since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, it is estimated that over half a million people have been either killed or maimed and several million displaced.
While Donald Trump famously came to the White House claiming he could end the war within 24 hours if elected, and since being inaugurated has upended the relations with Ukraine and with Europe, the prospects for a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia remain slim.
There remains considerable uncertainty as to whether Trump’s agenda extends beyond achievement of some commercial advantage with respect to Ukrainian resources, and possibly some restoration of relations between the USA and Russia.
At what stage are the current negotiations to end the war? Do the conditions exist to achieve a lasting peace?
