Tensions between China–Japan has hit a new high.
The immediate flashpoint came when Prime Minister Takaichi testified before Japan’s parliament on November 7. She declared that a Chinese military attack on Taiwan could be a “survival-threatening situation” for Japan and suggested that under such circumstances, Japan’s Self-Defense Forces might intervene, possibly in coordination with U.S. forces.
Beijing reacted sharply. The Chinese Foreign Ministry, Defense Ministry, and Taiwan Affairs Office all expressed strong condemnation. Chinese officials called Takaichi’s remarks “blatant interference” in China’s core interests, violating the one-China principle and undermining post-war diplomatic norms.
