Iran’s Fattah 2 hypersonic missile is being touted as a super weapon.
On 1 Oct 2024, the Islamic regime headed by Ali Khamenei fired more than 180 ballistic missiles, including its hypersonic medium-range Fattah-2, in a major offensive aimed at overwhelming Israel’s air defenses. While still unclear, some Fattah 2 seem to have penetrated Israeli air defenses.
Iran revealed Fattah-2’ in November 2023.
Hypersonic weapons travel at speeds greater than Mach 5, or more than 3,836 miler per hour.
The extreme speed of hypersonic weapons and the ability to fly in unpredictable paths give them a much higher probability of penetrating modern air defenses. Essentially, hypersonic weapons combine the speed of traditional ballistic missiles with the maneuverability of cruise missiles.
This type of weapon will be very hard to track and hence difficult to intercept.
Several methods are being used to achieve this, which include Scramjet engines, Air-Launched Ballistic missiles as well as Hypersonic Glide Vehicles.
Fattah 2 is thought to be a Hypersonic Glide Vehicle type platform possessing a range of 1600 km or 1000 miles.
