A U.S. F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter conducted an emergency landing in the Middle East following a combat mission over Iran on or around March 19, after sustaining damage.
Captain Tim Hawkins, spokesperson for the U.S. military’s United States Central Command (CENTCOM), confirmed that the aircraft landed safely and that the pilot was in stable condition. Hawkins added, without specifying the cause or location of the landing, “This incident is under investigation.”
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for targeting the aircraft with surface-to-air missiles and released footage purporting to show the engagement.
If confirmed, this would represent the first known instance of an F-35—valued at about $100 million—being struck by enemy fire.
