Japan is in the process of deploying its domestically developed Type 12 long-range surface-to-ship missiles in areas facing the East China Sea. Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara confirmed that the upgraded systems will be stationed at Camp Kengun in Kumamoto Prefecture by the end of March. Reports indicate that army vehicles transporting the initial batch of missile launchers were observed arriving at the base shortly after midnight.
This deployment follows a 2024 decision by Japan’s Ministry of Defense to accelerate the timeline by one year. Once operational, the system is expected to carry significant implications for regional deterrence dynamics and for China’s operational planning in the East China Sea and in contingencies involving Taiwan.
In this video, Defense Updates analyzes why Japan’s Type 12 missile deployment is a big headache for China ?
