Japan has formally confirmed plans to deploy medium-range surface-to-air missiles to Yonaguni, its westernmost island and just 110 km (68 miles) east of Taiwan—marking a significant escalation in Tokyo’s defense posture across the southwest island chain.
Defense Minister Gen Nakatani announced the move on November 23 during an inspection of the Ground Self-Defense Force (GSDF) coastal monitoring unit on the island. He emphasized that the deployment will “substantially strengthen deterrence and response capabilities” while reducing the chances of Japan being subjected to an armed attack.
The system to be deployed—likely the upgraded Type 03 Chū-SAM Kai or a newer configuration—will be based at the existing GSDF garrison established in 2016.
The announcement comes at a time of heightened regional friction and follows Japan’s landmark 2022 decision to acquire long-range counterstrike capabilities and raise defense spending to 2% of GDP by 2027, the most dramatic military expansion in decades.
