The war in Ukraine is not only being fought with tanks and missiles. It is also raging behind the scenes – in the digital information space and through sabotage. These attacks are no longer limited to Ukraine, as more and more countries in Europe are falling victim to hostile actions.
Are these already acts of war? How do these actions unfold? Who is behind them, who benefits, and how can Europe protect itself?
In this video, Colonel Markus Reisner analyzes the mechanisms of this new type of warfare: disinformation, cyberattacks, sabotage, and psychological manipulation as strategic weapons.
The title “Of little green men, the five bears, trolls, and disposable agents” is symbolic of the actors on this invisible battlefield: “Little green men” as covert forces without insignia, the “five bears” as a metaphor for state instruments of power and intelligence services, ‘trolls’ as targeted opinion manipulators on the internet, and “disposable agents” who are deployed for short periods and sacrificed to create destabilization.
