Russia’s Icebreaker ’50 Years of Victory’, collided with the Cargo Ship ‘Yamal Krechet’ in the Kara Sea.
’50 Years of Victory’, is a 25,000-ton Arktika-class nuclear-powered icebreaker.
This incident occurred on the night of January 26, 2025, during an icebreaking operation where the icebreaker was assisting the cargo ship through Arctic ice.
The collision resulted in damage to the port side edge plating in a section of the bow of the ship.
Importantly, the two OK-900A nuclear reactors of the Icebreaker are reportedly secure.
As of now, Russia is the only country that builds and operates nuclear-powered icebreakers, having built a number of such vessels to aid shipping along the Northern Sea Route and Russian arctic outposts. They are considered as geo strategic assets by Russia.
