Iran warned of the threat of an “uncontrollable explosion” of the situation in the Middle East after the U.S. vetoed a UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in the war between Israel and the Hamas terror group.
The top diplomat of the Islamic Republic, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian,, told UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in a phone call, according to an Iranian foreign ministry statement,
“As long as America supports the crimes of the Zionist regime [Israel] and the continuation of the war… there is a possibility of an uncontrollable explosion in the situation of the region,”
Tehran, which wants the elimination of Israel, provides substantial support to Hamas and other Palestinian extremist groups. Additionally, it sponsors terror proxies across the Middle East, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.
While the country has thrown many verbal volleys, it has refrained from outright military action.
The reason is most certainly Israel’s wide range of weapons and a specific one will be lingering in Iranian minds.
