Japan’s defense ministry has asked for a record 7.7 trillion yen ($52.67 billion) in spending for the 2024 fiscal year,
If approved, it would be a record and Japan’s highest-ever spending.
This is the latest step of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s plan to boost military spending by 43 trillion yen over five years.
The plan, announced last year, seeks to double defense spending to 2% of gross domestic product by 2027 as it faces an increasingly assertive China and an unpredictable North Korea.
Viewers may note that the plan to double military spending will add $315 billion to Japan’s defense budget over the next five years and make Japan’s military the world’s third largest, after the U.S. and China.
