The United States is moving ahead with preparations at Misawa Air Base, a key U.S. military installation in Japan, to enable the future deployment of fifth-generation stealth fighters. Under a modernization initiative unveiled in July 2024 aimed at upgrading U.S. tactical aviation forces stationed in Japan, the Pentagon plans to station 48 F-35A Lightning II aircraft at Misawa, replacing the base’s current fleet of 36 F-16 fighters.
Recently released U.S. Air Force photographs show airmen from the 35th Fighter Wing, which operates and supports Misawa Air Base, taking delivery of and unpacking specialized ground support equipment intended for the F-35A. These activities indicate that groundwork for the transition is already underway, with preparations reportedly starting weeks earlier as the base begins adapting its infrastructure and logistics to accommodate the advanced stealth aircraft.

As per caption for one of the released images, “The delivery of cargo supporting future F-35A Lightning II fighter aircraft operations will enhance the wing’s ability to generate and sustain airpower in support of Indo-Pacific regional security and deterrence"
While it remains unclear when Misawa will receive its first F-35A jets, the dice has clearly rolled.
