The Boeing C-17 Globemaster III stands as one of the most capable and versatile military transport aircraft ever built.
It can transport up to 170,900 pounds (77,500 kg) of cargo, including main battle tanks, helicopters, or up to 102 fully equipped paratroopers. It has a maximum cruise speed of Mach 0.74 with a range of 2760 miles (4,440 km).
One of its most remarkable features is that it can take off and land on runways as short as 3,500 feet (about 1,060 meters) in length and only 90 feet (27 meters) wide.
This is possible due to the fact that each of its four Pratt & Whitney F117-PW-100 turbofan engines is equipped with thrust reversers, which help the aircraft stop quickly after landing.Combined with its advanced flight control system and triple redundant brakes, it can come to a halt in as little as 2,000 feet (600 meters) after touchdown.
The thrust reversers can also be used to back-up.
