The alert covers the embassy, consulate, and affiliated schools

The US embassy in Nigeria has warned that American facilities and US-affiliated schools in the country could be targets of a potential terrorist attack, the mission reported on Monday.

The notice called on American citizens to stay alert and follow safety guidance while in Nigeria. “The US Embassy in Abuja informs US citizens of a possible terrorist threat against US facilities and US affiliated schools in Nigeria,” the advisory states.

Officials also listed several safety steps for Americans living in or visiting Nigeria. The guidance includes keeping mobile phones charged, staying alert in public places, avoiding crowds and demonstrations, changing regular routes and identifying emergency exits in buildings.

The embassy did not provide details about the source of the threat but remains on high alert amid the war in Iran, which has raised fears of possible retaliatory actions, according to Reuters.

‘The entire region is sliding into chaos’: Africa reacts to the Middle East crisis

The current conflict in the Middle East escalated on February 28 when the US and Israel carried out airstrikes on Iran and killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with other senior officials. In retaliation, Iran launched large waves of missile and drone strikes targeting Israel and US military bases across the Gulf region.

The Nigerian government has expressed concern over the escalating conflict and urged all parties to exercise restraint and avoid actions that could further inflame tensions. The country’s Foreign Ministry called for an immediate de-escalation and a return to dialogue and diplomacy in line with international law.

Nigeria’s officials also warned that continued hostilities could threaten regional and global stability, while advising Nigerian citizens in Iran and the Gulf region to remain vigilant and avoid areas near military facilities or large gatherings.
