Two crew members are missing after an engine room explosion caused the Ursa Major to capsize in the Mediterranean Sea

The Russian cargo vessel Ursa Major has sunk in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Spain, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s crisis center confirmed on Tuesday. According to a statement on its official Telegram account, the ship capsized following an explosion in its engine room.

The department noted that 16 crewmembers were aboard the Ursa Major at the time of the incident; 14 were rescued by the Spanish coast guard and taken to the port of Cartagena. Two people currently remain missing.

The Ursa Major was in transit between St. Petersburg and Vladivostok at the time of the incident. It left port on December 11 and was scheduled to arrive on January 22, according to ship-tracking service Marine Traffic.

Spanish media was first to report on the incident earlier on Tuesday. According to El Espanol, the explosion took place on the afternoon of December 23, when the ship was heading east towards the Strait of Gibraltar. After that, the Ursa Major deviated from its course and began to list. Several vessels that were fishing in the area at the time took part in the rescue efforts, and were later joined by Maritime Rescue specialists from the Clara Campoamor and the Navy patrol boat Serviola, the report stated.

An unconfirmed video posted on X early Tuesday purports to show the Ursa Major prior to its sinking. The footage shows the ship still afloat, listing heavily on the left side.

The ship’s captain reportedly told the Spanish media that it was carrying empty containers at the time of the incident. However, according to an earlier report by Portnews, citing the ship’s operator and owner SK-Yug, the vessel was initially loaded with a cargo of port cranes, as well as hatch covers for new icebreakers. The cargo was to be taken to Russia’s Far East amid the development of port infrastructure along the Northern Sea Route.

The Ursa Major, built in 2009, was the largest dry cargo ship operated by SK-Yug, a subsidiary of the Russian logistics company Oboronlogistics, part of the Russian Defense Ministry. The company earlier reported that the ship underwent scheduled maintenance in summer 2024.

Neither Oboronlogistics nor SK-Yug have commented on the incident so far.
