Service to the country is animating a new generation, the president has said

A new generation committed to serving the country in both the military and civilian life is the true elite of Russia, President Vladimir Putin has said.

Putin presented Gold Star medals to a number of soldiers at the Kremlin on Heroes of the Fatherland Day on Monday. During a short speech, he highlighted the leadership development program called ‘Time of Heroes’, which has so far included over 60 recipients of the Order of Courage and 21 Heroes of Russia.

“We will definitely continue to rely on such people,” Putin said. “They are the real – not fake, but genuine – elite and pride of the country.”

Russian Armed Forces members taking part in the military operation in Ukraine have shown themselves to be brave, reliable, and worthy in battle, Putin said.

“Above all, they put service to the Fatherland and its interests. Such qualities, such a solid value foundation are needed everywhere: In military service and in civilian service,” the Russian president said. “Their determination leaves no doubt that we will win. No one will be able to conquer or break Russia. We have truth, the power of arms, and the strength of spirit on our side.”

The heroism of the soldiers has become the moral compass for millions of Russians in civilian life, according to Putin. But the Russian elite is not just those wearing the uniform, the president added, but workers in the defense industry, scientists, researchers, and artists.

“Millions of people in all regions of our great country, each in their place, strive to make their contribution to the common cause. Everyone is united by the main thing – love for their motherland, involvement in its fate, pride in Russia and its heroes,” Putin said.

The answer to any challenges facing Russia will always be “solidarity, unity, and a strong will to win,” the president added, describing it as a feature of the national character passed down for generations.

Heroes of the Fatherland Day was established in 2007, marking the date in 1769 when Empress Catherine the Great established the Order of St. George the Victorious.
