The incident took place ahead of ‘Kyiv Queer Talk’ organized by ‘KyivPride’, a group that promotes gay rights

Ukrainian nationalists have clashed with law enforcement at an LGBTQ event in Kiev, local media reported on Sunday.

The incident took place outside the Office Repair Together meeting space in downtown Kiev, where the ‘KyivPride’ group – an organization promoting LGBTQ rights in Ukraine – was scheduled to hold a ‘Kyiv Queer Talk’ lecture, dedicated to the history of queerness and homophobia in Ukraine.

According to videos posted online, while guests were arriving for the lecture, a group of some two dozen men waving Ukrainian flags and the red-black banners of the Ukrainian nationalist movement stormed the location, supposedly trying to enter the building where the lecture was to take place. They clashed with police, who were patrolling the area, and threw smoke grenades at officers, according to witnesses’ accounts.

KyivPride later announced on its Telegram and Instagram channels that the lecture was cancelled, advising those who planned to attend not to arrive at the scene for their own safety. It confirmed that “unknown individuals” attacked the place where they were going to hold the meeting. The group slammed the actions of the attackers as “illegal” and “anti-Ukrainian.”

The Kiev police communications department confirmed the incident in a press statement and said that officers were able to contain the violence and disperse the attackers. It is unclear whether any arrests were made.

The LGBTQ movement has been seeking a more active role in Ukrainian society amid the conflict with Russia, where the movement is outlawed, and Kiev’s drive towards EU accession. The proponents of the movement have argued that state-level support for LGBTQ rights would make the bloc more amenable to accepting Ukraine within its ranks.

In late 2022, the Ukrainian Parliament passed a bill that banned hate speech and discrimination against LGBTQ people in mass media. Last year, Ukrainian MP Inna Sovsun submitted a draft bill intended to legalize same-sex marriages in the country. Ukraine’s LGBTQ groups have also repeatedly tried to demonstrate their support for Kiev’s forces fighting against Russia. The ‘KyivPride’ group earlier this year launched a fundraising campaign to collect four million hryvnias ($96,300) for organizations supplying drones to the Ukrainian military.

According to a poll by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) conducted earlier this year, some 70% of Ukrainians believe that LGBTQ people should have the same rights as other citizens. However, LGBTQ events in the country are often targeted by anti-LGBTQ groups. For instance, the most recent pride rally, which took place in Kiev in June this year, lasted only a few minutes and was dispersed by police after reports that radical, anti-LGBTQ groups planned to attack the gathering.
