The strikes were conducted in response to several assaults on US personnel in the country, US Central Command has said

The US military has carried out strikes against several targets in Syria that are believed to be associated with Iran-backed groups, according to a statement by the United States Central Command (Centcom) published on Tuesday.

In a post on X, Centcom said that the strikes were conducted in response to several attacks on US forces in Syria carried out over the past 24 hours by “Iranian backed groups.”

Centcom commander General Michael Erik Kurilla said that Washington’s retaliatory actions have sent a “clear” message to the Tehran-backed militants.

“Attacks against US and coalition partners in the region will not be tolerated,” Kurilla warned, denouncing the actions against US forces in Syria as “reckless.”

Centcom specified that Monday’s attacks were carried out against nine targets across two locations in Syria. “These strikes will degrade the Iranian-backed groups’ ability to plan and launch future attacks,” Centcom said.

Officially, the US has some 900 troops deployed in Syria and some 2,500 in neighboring Iraq. The US military presence is meant to help local security forces prevent the resurgence of the Islamic State terrorist organization, formerly known as ISIS.

Centcom did not name the armed groups that were targeted in the retaliatory strike or report whether the attack resulted in any casualties.

However, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has claimed that four Syrian members of Iran-backed groups were killed on Monday while ten others were severely injured in an “international coalition” attack on a facility in the Al Mayadeen area of eastern Syria’s Deir Al Zor region.
