Beauty queen crowned after citizenship row

Chidimma Adetshina, who was born to a Nigerian father, faced hostility in South Africa after questions arose about her nationality

A South African beauty pageant titleholder, forced last month to withdraw from that country’s contest amid a wave of anti-foreigner sentiment, was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria on Saturday, according to media reports.

23-year-old Chidimma Adetshina, who was born to a Nigerian father in South Africa, said after winning the contest that it was “a dream come true,” commenting that “This crown is not just for beauty; it’s a call for unity.”

In early August, Adetshina withdrew from the competition in South Africa, posting on Instagram that she had decided to do so for the “safety and wellbeing of my family.” 

Her selection as a Miss South Africa finalist in July sparked public outcry amid queries about her citizenship and eligibility.

South African authorities are reportedly now working to clarify Adetshina’s citizenship status, after suspicions arose that her mother could have committed fraud to obtain South African citizenship in 2001.

Following her withdrawal from the South African contest, Adetshina reportedly received an invitation from the organizers of the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, who said it was a chance for her to represent her “father’s native land on an international stage.”

“This journey has been a tough journey for me … I am so proud of myself and I’m really grateful for the love and the support,” Adetshina told AFP after being crowned in Lagos on Saturday. “This is something that I’ve always wanted, and I’m really glad that I have a second shot as well at achieving it.”

Adetshina will now represent Nigeria at the international Miss Universe competition scheduled to take place in November in Mexico.
