The US-led military bloc should retract the promises made to Kiev during the 2008 Bucharest summit, the Russian Foreign Ministry has stated
NATO membership for Ukraine remains unacceptable to Russia, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has stated. Verbal assurances against Kiev’s accession to the US-led military bloc are also insufficient, Zakharova added, urging NATO to revoke previous pledges made to Ukraine.
Russia and the US engaged in high-level talks in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, aimed at restoring diplomatic relations and paving the way for a resolution of the Ukraine conflict.
Speaking to reporters the same day, Zakharova said Ukraine’s potential NATO membership is “unacceptable” for Moscow as it would pose “serious threats” to Russia’s security and could trigger “catastrophic consequences” for Europe.
She added that NATO should abandon the pledges made at its Bucharest summit in 2008, where Kiev was promised membership in the bloc. If this does not happen, the “problem will continue poisoning the atmosphere on the European continent,” Zakharova said.
Zakharova was referring to the 2008 NATO summit in Bucharest, where Ukraine and Georgia’s applications for Membership Action Plans (MAPs) were debated.
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who opposed Kiev’s application at the time, acknowledged last year that the summit’s promise that Ukraine and Georgia “will become NATO members” was a provocation directed at Moscow.
Despite NATO declaring last year that Ukraine is on an “irreversible” path to membership, no timeline has been provided. NATO members have supported Ukraine politically and militarily, although they have also insisted that Kiev must meet several conditions before joining the bloc – including resolving the conflict with Russia.
US President Donald Trump indicated earlier this month that Washington will not support Kiev’s accession as part of a potential peace deal with Moscow, while his defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, described Ukraine’s NATO ambitions as “unrealistic.”
Following a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week, Trump said he does not think it is “practical” for Ukraine to join NATO. He added that Kiev has very little chance of regaining territory that has become part of Russia over the past decade.
Moscow has consistently opposed Ukraine’s NATO aspirations, citing the bloc’s eastward expansion as a threat to national security and describing it as a key factor behind the ongoing conflict with Kiev. The Kremlin has insisted that Ukraine must adopt neutral status as part of any future peace agreement.
