The Hungarian prime minister has said his nation is ready for Donald Trump’s presidency despite the EU’s fears of a trade war
Hungary does not share the EU’s concerns about a possible trade war with the US, Prime Minister Viktor Orban said in a Facebook post on Tuesday. He added that his nation will reap economic benefits from the US under Donald Trump’s presidency.
Last week, the US president announced plans to impose tariffs on EU goods to address what he views as an unfavorable trade balance. The threat cast a shadow on the first informal meeting on Monday of EU leaders since Trump’s inauguration, in which the bloc’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, claimed that only China would benefit from a trans-Atlantic trade war.
Orban, a long-time critic of Brussels’ policies and supporter of Trump during his presidential campaign, said in his post on Facebook that other EU leaders are treating Trump’s arrival like an “incoming tornado,” hoping to weather the storm. He predicted that this will be futile, since the new administration in Washington has “turned the world upside down” in just two weeks.
“The gender madness in America is over, the financing of globalist Soros organizations is over, illegal migration is over, and support for the Russian-Ukrainian war is over. In other words, everything that the bureaucrats in Brussels have tried to force down our throats in recent years is over,” Orban wrote.
While Brussels is facing “tough times,” Budapest is eager to say goodbye to outdated trade rules, the Hungarian prime minister said. He intends to strike a deal with Trump that would preserve economic cooperation between their nations, grounded in mutual respect.
“We always knew that President Trump would return, so we were ready,” he said. “And the people of Brussels can reap what they sow!”
The Hungarian government has been critical of a number of policies adopted by Brussels, particularly concerning the Ukraine conflict. The EU’s sanctions on Russia have failed to end the conflict and have done considerable economic harm to member states, according to Orban, who envisions Hungary as a key intermediary between the EU and Russia.
