Washington has meetings scheduled with representatives from Moscow and Kiev, the US president has said
The US is set to hold talks with both Russia and Ukraine over the settlement of the conflict, President Donald Trump has announced, adding that discussions on the issue are “going pretty well.”
Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said the US is attempting to resolve several crises. “As far as other things are concerned, as you know, we had a very busy weekend. We’re dealing with Israel, we’re dealing with Ukraine and Russia,” he said.
“We have meetings and talks scheduled with various parties, including Ukraine and Russia, and I think those discussions are actually going pretty well,” he added.
The comments come after Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy for Ukraine, suggested that both Kiev and Moscow would have to make concessions for a peace deal to be reached. “I think both sides will give a little bit,” he told Fox News.
Kellogg added that Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky was already considering changes to his stance on ruling out any formal territorial concessions. “Zelensky has already indicated he will soften his position on land,” he stated. At the same time, the envoy claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin “is going to have to soften his positions as well.”
Speaking about the timeline for a possible resolution, Kellogg estimated that an agreement could be reached within months. “It’s not years we are talking about. We have a solid action plan,” he said.
On Saturday, Kellogg also told Reuters that the US wants Ukraine to hold elections, potentially by the end of the year. Kiev has suspended presidential and parliamentary elections citing martial law, with Zelensky’s term having expired last May. In light of this, Moscow deems him “illegitimate,” stressing that the only legal authority now rests with the Ukrainian parliament and its speaker.
Russian officials have stated that they are open to talks with the US on the Ukraine conflict but emphasized that no substantial agreements on discussions have been reached.
Earlier media reports have suggested that Trump’s potential peace plan for Ukraine could involve a ceasefire along the current front lines and the creation of an 800-mile demilitarized zone patrolled by European troops. Additionally, the plan could reportedly require Ukraine to delay its aspirations for NATO membership for at least 20 years.
However, Russia has ruled out the freezing of the conflict, stating that hostilities will only end when Ukraine agrees to permanent neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification while recognizing “territorial realities on the ground.”
