The request was reportedly made when diplomats from Moscow visited Damascus to meet the new government

Syria’s new leadership is seeking compensation from Russia to “restore trust” between the two nations, news agency Sana has reported.

The request was made on Wednesday, during Russian diplomats’ first visit to Damascus since its leadership change, according to the outlet.

During the discussions, the Russian delegation “confirmed its support for the positive changes,” the state-owned agency claimed, highlighting Moscow’s role in “rebuilding trust with the Syrian people through concrete measures such as compensation, reconstruction, and restoration.”

The new Syrian authorities, led by the movement Hayat Tahrir-al-Sham (HTS), reportedly stated that Moscow should take into account “past mistakes” and respect the will of the Syrian people,” according to the outlet.

Damascus also allegedly demanded the extradition of former President Bashar Assad, who fled Syria following the fall of his government in late 2024, and was granted asylum in Russia.

Russian delegation visits Syria

Following the meeting, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, who led the delegation, said Moscow and Damascus intend to maintain their historically stable and mutually beneficial relationship.

The talks addressed Russia’s continued military presence in Syria at the Khmeimim and Tartus bases, although no specific agreements were reached, according to Bogdanov.

Moscow operates the Khmeimim Air Base and a logistical support center in Tartus, both situated on the Mediterranean coast. In 2017, Russia and Syria agreed to station Moscow’s troops there for 49 years. The status of Russian facilities has not changed, according to the diplomat.

Bogdanov also said that Moscow is ready to help stabilize Syria and tackle economic and social issues, adding that Damascus showed “understanding and attention” to Russia’s stance.

Speaking to journalists on Wednesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to comment on the reported demands, stating: “I leave it without any comments.”

However, he emphasized the importance of maintaining a “constant dialogue with the Syrian authorities, on what we are doing and will continue to do.”

Earlier this month, Syria’s de facto leader Ahmed Al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammad al-Jolani, said Damascus has “strategic interests” in maintaining good relations with the “second most powerful country in the world,” referring to Russia.
