The US president has called for addressing concerns over the agency’s disaster response and alleged political bias

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order establishing a review council to evaluate the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Co-chaired by the secretaries of Homeland Security and Defense, it will be tasked with assessing FEMA’s effectiveness and recommending improvements.

In the order, released on Friday, Trump cited concerns over FEMA’s response to recent disasters, stating: “Despite obligating nearly $30 billion in disaster aid each of the past three years, FEMA has managed to leave vulnerable Americans without the resources or support they need when they need it most.”

The president also highlighted issues of political bias within the agency. This follows an incident where a FEMA supervisor was fired for instructing relief workers to avoid homes displaying pro-Trump signs after Hurricane Milton in Florida.

Acting FEMA head Cam Hamilton responded to the executive order by reassuring staff of the agency’s critical role in national security and disaster response. He emphasized the importance of FEMA’s mission and the dedication of its employees.

The newly formed council is expected to hold its first public meeting within 90 days and submit a report with recommendations within 180 days of that meeting.

FEMA, established in 1979, is responsible for coordinating the federal government’s response to natural and man-made disasters. The agency has faced criticism over the years for its handling of various emergencies, including Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and Hurricane Maria in 2017.

In recent months, Trump has been vocal about his dissatisfaction with FEMA’s performance.

Commenting on the devastating wildfires that broke out this month in Southern California, the Republican posted on Truth Social: “No water in the fire hydrants, no money in FEMA. This is what [former President] Joe Biden is leaving me. Thanks, Joe!”

During a visit to North Carolina after Hurricane Helene, he suggested that the agency might be overhauled or even eliminated, stating, “I think, frankly, FEMA is not good.”
