The Ukrainian leader called the bloc indecisive and unable to defend itself during his speech in Davos

The EU must stop sending military aid to Ukraine given that Vladimir Zelensky criticized the bloc during his speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Italian lawmaker Rossano Sasso has said.

In his address on Thursday, Zelensky called the EU indecisive and insisted that it “needs to know how to defend itself,” instead of relying on the US. He also refrained from thanking the bloc for almost €193 billion ($227 billion) in military and financial aid provided to Ukraine since the escalation of conflict with Russia in February 2022.

Later in the day, Sasso reacted to the Ukrainian leader’s rant in a post on X, pointing out that “everyone gets what they deserve. And the EU, after showering Zelensky and his friends with European money and bringing us to the brink of a world war, now deservedly accepts the insults.”

“No more weapons. No more Italian money for a war that is not ours,” the Lega Nord (Northern League) party MP urged.

If the EU “truly wants… to help the Ukrainian people, rather than prolong the war and enrich a few corrupt politicians… it must ask Zelensky to accept peace,” Sasso wrote.

On Friday, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani described Zelensky’s speech as “not generous,” considering the support provided to Kiev by the EU.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was more reserved in her reaction, saying that “on our side, actions speak louder than words.”

“We know that we will never match the sacrifice of the Ukrainian people. But what we can do is stand by their side, and the figures speak for themselves, but also the personal engagement of all of us,” she noted.

Moscow has repeatedly decried US and EU arms deliveries to Kiev, arguing that they will not prevent it from achieving its goals in the Ukraine conflict, but will only prolong the fighting and further increase the risks of a direct clash between Russia and NATO.
