Republican Andy Ogles is seeking to raise the limit for presidents who have served two non-consecutive tenures
Republican Congressman Andy Ogles has floated a constitutional amendment that would allow US President Donald Trump to run for a third term in 2028.
In a statement on Thursday, Ogles (Tennessee) proposed a resolution that could pave the way for a US president to serve up to three terms, provided his first two terms were not consecutive.
He also signaled that the measure would be specifically tailored to Trump, who served as president between 2017 and 2021 and was sworn in for a second time this week.
“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” the text of the proposal reads.
Ogles noted that this amendment “would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs.”
“It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration,” he added.
However, Axios noted that Ogles’ proposal is highly unlikely to pass, given the adoption of a new constitutional amendment – which would be a historic milestone in itself – must meet extremely high standards. An amendment should be approved by a two-thirds majority both in the House of Representatives and the Senate, and later ratified by three-fourths of state legislatures, or by conventions in 38 out of 50 states.
The two-term presidential limit in the US was established by the 22nd Amendment, which was ratified in 1951. The development followed Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms in office, with lawmakers aiming to prevent extended presidencies.
