Yura Borisov will be considered for “best supporting actor” for his role in ‘Anora’

Russian actor Yura Borisov has been nominated for a British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) award in the Best Supporting Actor category for his role in the film ‘Anora’ by American director Sean Baker.

The announcement was made on BAFTA’s official website on Wednesday. ‘Anora’ has also received nominations in four other categories, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Screenplay.

The film is a love story about a Brooklyn sex worker named Anora and the son of a Russian oligarch. When the two get married, the young man’s family sets out to do everything they can to break them up. In the film, 32-year-old Borisov plays the role of Igor – a henchman working for the groom’s family.

The premiere of ‘Anora’ took place on May 21 at the Cannes Film Festival, where it received a Golden Palm. Since then, Borisov has received over a dozen nominations for his role in the picture, including from the US Screen Actors Guild, the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, and the Gotham Awards.

Previously, Borisov also received a Golden Globe nomination for ‘Anora’, competing for ‘Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role’ against Denzel Washington for ‘Gladiator II’ and Edward Norton for ‘A Complete Unknown’. Kieran Culkin ultimately won the trophy for his role in ‘A Real Pain’.

Winners of the BAFTA awards will be announced during a ceremony on February 16.

Borisov graduated from the Mikhail Shchepkin Higher Theater School in Moscow in 2013, and began his film acting career in 2010. Since then, he has starred in nearly two dozen films, mostly produced in Russia. In 2021 he won Russia’s Golden Eagle Award for best leading actor in ‘The Bull’ and received a nomination for Best Actor from the European Film Awards for his role in the Finnish film ‘Compartment No.6.’
