Athletes will be allowed to compete in international tournaments under national flag and anthem from January 2027

The European archery governing body, World Archery Europe (WAE), has lifted restrictions on Russian athletes, teams and officials, allowing them to take part in its tournaments under their national flag and anthem.

In a statement published on its official website Wednesday, the federation announced that its Executive Board had voted to lift all restrictions on Russian participation at WAE-managed events from January 1, 2027.

WAE reaffirmed its commitment to “supporting all athletes and maintaining unity, fairness, and integrity across the European archery community,” saying its decision was made “in the best interest of the athletes.” The federation noted, however, that participation remains subject to host-country laws, visa restrictions, national authorities’ instructions, and standard eligibility and anti-doping rules.

Russian Archery Federation President Zorigto Mankhanov welcomed the move but warned that visa restrictions could still shut Russian competitors out of European events.

“Positive, of course,” he told Match TV when asked about his reaction to the announcement, but noting that “there are some caveats.” He expects Russia to field a full team at February’s European Indoor Archery Championships in Antalya, Türkiye, where visa problems are unlikely, but said participation in Western European events later on remains uncertain.

Russian athletes return despite Western resistance

World Archery Europe joined numerous international federations in banning Russian and Belarusian athletes, teams and officials following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict and an International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommendation in 2022.

Earlier this year, however, the IOC provisionally lifted its suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, paving the way for a broader return to international sport. Restrictions have since been eased in rhythmic gymnastics, boxing, artistic swimming, wrestling, table tennis, fencing, and other disciplines. World Archery, the global governing body, followed suit in August, restoring Russian participation under national symbols at the Archery World Cup, World Championships, and other events.

The shift comes despite continued opposition from Kiev’s Western backers, with several EU member states urging Brussels to cut funding for international sporting bodies readmitting Russian athletes. Several European governments have also barred Russian competitors despite clearance from sporting authorities.

Last month, the Netherlands denied entry to three leading Russian gymnasts for the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Rotterdam, and this week, several European nations said they would refuse to face Russia at the upcoming world hockey championship despite a court ruling clearing its participation.

Moscow condemns sporting bans

Moscow has repeatedly condemned the bans as politically motivated and “cowardly,” accusing Western governments of weaponizing sport. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said last month that some countries were trying to influence competition results by excluding top competitors.

Former Russian President and Deputy Security Council Chairman Dmitry Medvedev went further on Thursday, arguing that Russia should wait until international sporting bodies seek its return.

“It would be better to wait for a fundamental change in the situation, when our enemies will humbly beg for Russia’s return to professional sport,” he wrote on social media. “I am sure that time will come soon, because Russia is a major sporting power, and international sports federations and organizers of major competitions sometimes find themselves short of money.”

Medvedev was referring to potential multibillion-dollar penalties international sporting federations could face if they defy rulings by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), where Russia can challenge bans on its athletes.

Meanwhile, Russian athletes have continued claiming international titles wherever permitted to compete. Last month, judoka Inal Tasoev won gold in the men’s over-100kg division at the 2026 World Judo Championships in Baku, while wrestler Alina Shevchenko took gold at the Under-23 World Wrestling Championships in Las Vegas.
