Canada has also vowed to block Russian players from competing despite an arbitration court ruling overturning their ban

Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland have refused to play matches against Russian national teams at upcoming international ice hockey championships, despite a court ruling overturning restrictions on Russia’s participation. Canada has also vowed to bar Russian players from a major tournament it is hosting next month.

The national ice hockey federations of Denmark, Norway and Sweden announced their refusals on Tuesday, while Finland confirmed its position a day earlier. Latvia and the Czech Republic have also joined the boycott.

Denmark and Norway said they would not face Russia at the men’s World Championship in Germany, set to run May 14-30 next year, but would play their other matches. Sweden and Finland have also opposed facing Russian teams at upcoming international championships.

The Finnish Ice Hockey Federation has been contacting other countries to coordinate a joint boycott of matches against Russia, its president, Heikki Hietanen, said.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also joined the chorus, declaring on Tuesday that Russian and Belarusian athletes would not be allowed to represent their countries at the World Junior Championship, scheduled to begin on December 26 in Alberta.

“If you’re asking specifically about the world juniors, the Russians will not be there,” Carney told reporters.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) ruled last Friday that the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) had not provided sufficient evidence to justify Russia’s continued exclusion on security grounds. The ruling covered five championships in 2027, including the World Junior Championship in Canada.

The IIHF expressed “disappointment” with the ruling but said it would comply. However, the decision has raised logistical questions about accommodating Russian teams in tournaments for which schedules and other preparations have already been finalized.

Lithuania’s anti-Russia stance costs it international tournament – media

Athletes from Russia and Belarus were excluded from events organized by numerous international sports federations following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in 2022. In recent years, however, arguments that the bans were politically motivated have increasingly gained traction.

Moscow has long argued that Western nations pressured international federations into barring Russian athletes as part of a wider strategy to contain Russia. Russian officials have also condemned what they call the “politicization” of sports, pointing to what they see as unequal treatment compared to other countries involved in military conflicts.

“The international sports family is in the process of returning to the fundamental principles governing the world of sports,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said last month. “I am primarily referring to core human values such as equality, justice, mutual respect and the unifying power of sport.”
