Government troops have mounted a counteroffensive after losing key Red Sea ports to the Shiite militants in September

Yemen has claimed its army has been able to stop an advance by Houthi militants in the southwest of the country.

The hostilities between Yemen and its coalition allies and the Iranian-backed Ansar Allah movement escalated in September when the Shiite group seized the strategically important Red Sea port cities of Mocha and Dhubab as well as Perim Island in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The Houthis have since also encircled the country’s third-largest city, Taiz, with forces loyal to the internationally recognized government trapped inside.

According to Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, which allegedly has close ties to the Saudi royal family, the Houthis mounted an offensive along the border between Lahij and Taiz governorates on Friday.

However, Saudi-backed troops reportedly pushed back the advancing militants, with airstrikes and artillery fire disrupting the Houthis’ supply lines, and staged a counteroffensive.

Fighting has also continued around the besieged city of Taiz.

Conflicting reports have been coming in regarding the situation in the north of Yemen over the weekend.

On Saturday, the internationally recognized government announced that its troops had recaptured positions in the northern governorate of al-Jawf, which borders Saudi Arabia. The Houthis, in turn, said that they had thwarted advances in the same governorate, as well as in neighboring Marib.

Houthis will respond ‘eye for an eye’ to Saudi attacks – foreign minister (VIDEO)

In recent weeks, the Houthis have claimed responsibility for multiple missile and drone strikes targeting strategic facilities in Saudi Arabia, including the Ras Tanura oil refinery, King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, and King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, as well as a military installation in Najran region.

In a statement posted on X last Saturday, the Shiite group’s spokesman, Yahya Saree, stressed that the Houthis were conducting such attacks in retaliation for Saudi airstrikes on Yemen.
Ansar Allah’s representative warned that strikes on Saudi territory would continue until Riyadh ended its “aggression” and lifted a blockade it had imposed on the neighboring country.

After the Houthis seized large stretches of Yemen’s Red Sea coast and territory around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait in September, government troops mounted a counteroffensive, claiming to have recaptured key positions near the vital shipping route connecting the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

Meanwhile, Riyadh has stepped up its air support, intensifying strikes on Houthi-held territory.

Yemen has remained locked in a civil war since 2014, with the situation further aggravated by a Saudi-led intervention launched the following year. Large-scale fighting largely subsided following a UN-brokered truce in 2022 but flared up again in July after Saudi-backed government forces struck the Houthi-held Sanaa Airport.
