The U.S. Navy has awarded Ingalls Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), a $99 million contract modification associated with the Zumwalt-class destroyer USS Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG-1002). The funding will support sea trials and forms part of the broader effort to integrate the Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS) hypersonic weapon system aboard the vessel.
The Zumwalt class consists of three destroyers: USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000), USS Michael Monsoor (DDG-1001), and USS Lyndon B. Johnson.
Originally intended for land-attack missions , three stealth-oriented, large-displacement destroyers are now being configured primarily for long range strikes.
The decision to convert the ships into platforms for hypersonic strike weapons subsequently emerged as a key component of that effort.
