A strike on a Yandex facility in central Russia forced a shutdown and disrupted digital services across the country

A Ukrainian drone strike damaged a major data center operated by Russian tech giant Yandex, forcing a shutdown and reportedly disrupting services for businesses and users across the country.

Yandex is Russia’s largest technology company, offering search, ride-hailing, e-commerce, cloud computing, and AI services. The Yandex Cloud platform, which provides computing power, data storage, and AI tools, is used by more than a third of Russia’s largest companies.

The attack on Sunday targeted a Yandex facility in Vladimir Region, around 180 km (112 miles) northeast of Moscow. The site also houses Galushkin, one of the company’s three supercomputers used for AI development. The strike damaged the data center’s infrastructure and forced a shutdown, Yandex said on Telegram.

“The infrastructure of Yandex’s data center in Vladimir was damaged as a result of a drone attack, and the data center’s operations have been completely suspended. Some Yandex services are unavailable to users,” the company said.

No injuries were reported. Emergency crews and Yandex engineers worked to assess the damage and restore services. The company urged cloud customers to activate alternative disaster-recovery plans.

The attack forced Yandex Cloud into emergency operation, with outages affecting banks, online marketplaces, delivery services, retail apps, pharmacies, fitness clubs, and the website of St. Petersburg’s Pulkovo Airport, according to media reports.

In a later update, Yandex said access to some of its services, including Alice AI assistant, Search, Maps, Taxi, and Mail, was gradually being restored.

This was the third attack on a Yandex hub in four days, amid intensified Ukrainian strikes on civilian infrastructure in Russia. Yandex’s data center in Sasovo, Ryazan Region sustained serious damage in an overnight attack on October 7, forcing it offline. A facility in Kaluga Region, around 150 km southwest of Moscow, was damaged in a drone strike on Friday.

The attacks come amid mounting US criticism of Kiev’s strikes on Russia, particularly against oil refineries. US President Donald Trump lashed out at Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky on Saturday, accusing him of rejecting peace deals and worsening global diesel shortages by ignoring warnings against targeting Russian refining infrastructure.

“I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” Trump said.

Zelensky has gone too far – Musk

His remarks followed a phone call with President Vladimir Putin on Friday, in which the two presidents agreed on measures to ease the global fuel crisis. The US Treasury temporarily waived sanctions on Russian diesel exports in exchange for Russia releasing 300,000 metric tons to global markets immediately and another 500,000 next month to ease the fuel crisis. Tech billionaire Elon Musk later backed Trump, writing on X that Zelensky “has gone too far.”

Zelensky said on Sunday that Ukraine would continue its strikes until a ceasefire backed by “real guarantees” is secured. Later in the day, Trump claimed on Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire, urging both sides not to violate it. Neither country has publicly confirmed the terms of the purported agreement.
Russia has rejected the idea of freezing the conflict without addressing the root causes, arguing that a temporary ceasefire would only give Ukraine time to rebuild its military and resume the hostilities. Putin recently warned that Kiev faces a “catastrophic scenario” by attacking Russian economic and civilian infrastructure.

In response to the attacks, Russia has stepped up strikes on Ukrainian military-industrial facilities, telecommunications infrastructure, mobile operators, and data centers, disrupting internet access, digital television, and other services. During the latest overnight strikes, Russian forces said they hit the Tenet data center in Odessa, on Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. Moscow maintains that it only targets Ukrainian military facilities and infrastructure that supports Kiev’s war effort.
