In May 2026, a shipment of unserviceable F-35A components – reportedly including a cockpit canopy – was sent from Australia to the United States for repair. The cargo was inexplicably diverted to Hong Kong, a Chinese-administered territory, triggering U.S. and Australian investigations. Although Australia’s Defence Minister Richard Marles has publicly downplayed the incident stating “we’re not talking about sensitive equipment here, or sensitive parts”, experts warn that even degraded F-35 components can reveal critical stealth technology.
