The March 2026 visit to Australia by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen marked a watershed moment in Australia–EU relations. The conclusion of negotiations on the Australia–EU Free Trade Agreement, the establishment of a Security and Defence Partnership, and Australia’s forthcoming association with Horizon Europe together represent a significant upgrade in the bilateral relationship.
