Nearly two-thirds of the $43.6 billion bill is expected to go toward replenishing depleted munitions stockpiles
The war with Iran has cost the US $43.6 billion, with nearly two-thirds of the bill going toward replenishing depleted munitions stockpiles, according to US Central Command (CENTCOM) figures sent to lawmakers and shared with the media on Friday.
The estimate covers costs through September 3. The Pentagon had obligated about $11.2 billion for military operations and projected another $28.1 billion would be needed to replace expended munitions. A further $4.3 billion was allocated for replacing equipment losses.
The $43.6 billion figure does not include the likely billions of dollars needed to repair US bases and other military facilities in the region damaged or destroyed by Iranian attacks, according to Bloomberg.
Iran damaged or destroyed hundreds of buildings and other structures at US bases across eight Middle Eastern countries, according to a Pentagon inspector general report released on Monday. Iranian attacks also damaged or destroyed expensive high-tech radar systems at several US facilities.
The war “resulted in strategic inventory shortfalls and revealed industrial base bottlenecks for munitions resupply,” the report said.
Most of the munitions expenditure stemmed from efforts to intercept Iranian missile and drone strikes, according to an earlier estimate by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS). Around 58% of the estimated spending went toward air-defense munitions such as Patriot, THAAD and other key missiles, putting pressure on interceptor stockpiles, the think tank estimated in June.
Washington may have expended more than half of its prewar inventory of Patriot, SM-3 and THAAD interceptors during the conflict, CSIS wrote in a May update.
President Donald Trump has repeatedly denied reports of munitions shortages and called reports and leaks about depleted US weapons stocks “treasonous.”
US forces fired 60 to 70 Patriot interceptors and more than a dozen THAAD missiles against an Iranian volley of around 20 ballistic missiles during an attack on a US base in Jordan on September 8, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing unnamed officials.
The expenditure was equivalent to what US forces had used during a full week at other points in the conflict, the newspaper reported. Iran adapted its tactics to force US troops to burn through munitions and used warheads that split into multiple projectiles on approach, the WSJ cited its sources as saying. According to Reuters, the strike damaged multiple US military aircraft.
