Kabul wants normal ties with Washington while seeking closer cooperation with Russia and India, Zabihullah Mujahid has told RT
Afghanistan is “undoubtedly” better off five years after the withdrawal of US forces, Taliban chief spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid has told RT, while acknowledging that the country continues to face serious problems.
In a rare interview with RT India’s Runjhun Sharma, Mujahid argued that the departure of foreign troops has restored Afghanistan’s independence and left Afghans responsible for rebuilding their own country.
The Taliban returned to power in August 2021 as the Western-backed government collapsed and US forces completed their withdrawal after two decades of war. The hardline Islamist movement has since reinstated a strict interpretation of Sharia law, including sweeping restrictions on women and girls that have drawn widespread international criticism.
However, despite the conflict, Mujahid said Kabul now wants normal diplomatic relations with Washington, including the reopening of the US Embassy in Afghanistan and an Afghan mission in the American capital.
He also argued that Western perceptions of the Taliban remain shaped by two decades of war, accusing international media of portraying the group as seeking conflict and instability and posing a threat to the outside world.
“But now the war is over, and I believe those wartime policies, both political and media policies, should also change,” he said, urging foreign governments and journalists to engage directly with the Taliban and “understand our goals.”
He also called for sanctions to be lifted and frozen Afghan assets to be returned, saying the measures would help improve relations.
Commenting on Afghanistan’s relations with Russia, which is currently the only country to recognize the Taliban government, Mujahid described Moscow as an important regional partner and said Kabul wants Russian companies to invest in Afghanistan while expanding cooperation in trade, reconstruction, fuel, and energy.
The spokesman also rejected suggestions that the Taliban should change its domestic policies in exchange for international recognition. Asked specifically about restrictions affecting women and girls, he argued that Afghanistan has already met the normal requirements of statehood and should not be subjected to additional conditions.
“Afghanistan has its own beliefs and convictions, has its own religion and faith, has its own internal interests, and has its own laws,” he said. “These should be valued and respected.”
