The U.S. Army is preparing to activate a new air-defense battalion on Guam in October, equipped with Patriot and the Enduring Shield system, a key component of the service’s Indirect Fire Protection Capability (IFPC) program.
The new formation will be designated the 3rd Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery Regiment, or 3-43rd ADA. The unit will fall, at least in part, under the 94th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, headquartered at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.

The establishment of 3-43rd ADA represents a significant development in the United States’ long-running effort to strengthen the air and missile defenses of Guam. Given the island’s strategic location in the Western Pacific and its importance to U.S. military operations in the region, enhancing its ability to withstand aerial and missile attacks has become an increasingly important priority.
The development therefore warrants a closer examination of the systems involved, their respective roles, and how they are expected to function as part of Guam’s broader air and missile defense network.
