Bulgarian officials have blamed the incident in Gabrovo Province on the accidental ignition of a delivery truck

Multiple explosions have been heard at a Bulgarian munitions storage facility after a delivery truck serving a military plant caught fire, local media have reported.

The incident occurred around midday on Monday near the village of Belitsa in Gabrovo Province, according to the BGNES news agency, which published footage showing a large white cloud rising in the distance, accompanied by loud bangs.

No casualties were reported. Officials attributed the fire to the accidental ignition of the vehicle. The facility was cordoned off and around 300 employees of Bulgarian arms manufacturer EMCO were evacuated, while residents of nearby settlements were advised to remain indoors, Gabrovo Governor Kristina Sidorova said.

Bulgaria, a NATO member and formerly a major supplier of military aid to Ukraine, has distanced itself from the conflict under Prime Minister Rumen Radev’s government. In June, Sofia said it would send no further weapons packages to Kiev. Last month it withdrew from the so-called “coalition of the willing,” a UK- and France-led group of European countries funding Ukraine.

EMCO is one of Bulgaria’s major ammunition manufacturers and has supplied Ukraine since at least 2014. Publicly available records do not specify which products are manufactured or stored at the Belitsa facility.

Ukrainian drone explodes near critical gas pipeline in Bulgaria – Sofia

The incident came days after a Ukrainian drone crashed in Bulgaria near a compressor station serving the Trans-Balkan Pipeline, a strategic gas route connecting Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, Moldova, and Ukraine. Radev said the UAV had been carrying “a significant amount of explosives.”

Ukraine has clashed with governments in Eastern Europe that it accuses of undermining its war effort. Earlier this year, deliveries of Russian oil to Hungary and Slovakia through the Druzhba pipeline were suspended shortly before a key parliamentary election in Hungary, which resulted in the ouster of the government in Budapest. Supplies through the pipeline resumed in April.
