President Trump’s visit to Beijing earlier this month has focused global attention on the intensifying rivalry between the United States and China. This vigorous, multi-dimensional contest will unfold over decades.
Beijing claims there is no such rivalry (!). For his part, Mr Trump spoke of ‘a very special relationship’ and labelled his visit a great success. They agreed to build "a constructive relationship of strategic stability on the basis of fairness and reciprocity".
What does this mean? What’s really going on? How far have things shifted since the last presidential visit to Beijing? (also Mr Trump, in 2017) What might be expected next?
It’s complicated, but Graham will draw on his 40+ years of dealing with both, and attempt to explain.
