The US president is open to dialogue with Russia and his contacts with Vladimir Putin will continue, the Kremin has said

US President Donald Trump has a “consistent” understanding of the Ukraine conflict and is receptive of what Moscow has to say on the issue, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has told journalists. The official also confirmed that Russia expects Trump to resume his contacts with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon.

Just days earlier, the two presidents spoke by phone on the 250th anniversary of American independence. According to the Kremlin, Putin and Trump spoke for nearly 1.5 hours on Saturday and discussed a wide range of topics, including Ukraine, Iran, and bilateral ties. The current US administration has sought to play the role of a mediator in the Ukraine conflict.

“President Trump has a consistent position [on the Ukraine conflict],” Peskov told journalists on Monday, commenting on the American president’s role in the peace process. “He is consistent and confident in his understanding of what is happening. Most importantly, he is open to hearing the information that President Putin conveys to him.”

The Kremlin spokesman also dismissed what he called “speculation” about Trump constantly shifting his position on the Ukraine conflict by calling it “not consistent with reality.”

Washington resumed direct contacts with Moscow in early 2025 after Trump returned to the White House following years of diplomatic freeze under his predecessor, Joe Biden.

Several rounds of US-mediated talks, as well as direct meetings between Russian and Ukrainian delegations, have yielded some tangible results, including major prisoner exchanges, the repatriation of fallen soldiers, and the exchange of peace memorandums, but failed to produce a peace deal. The process slowed down earlier this year as the US shifted focus to Iran but Trump signaled last month that Washington would resume its efforts to end the Ukraine conflict.

On Monday, Peskov confirmed that both presidents “have an understanding” that “their contacts will continue in the near future.” Reuters reported that the US president may call his Russian counterpart later this week after meeting Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Türkiye.
