Taiwan has revealed its first domestically manufactured submarine, marking a significant milestone in a project intended to enhance the island’s defense capabilities and serve as a deterrent against the Chinese navy.
President Tsai Ing-wen presided over the launch ceremony.
Tsai Ing-wen, who initiated the plan when she took office in 2016, showed off the first of 8 new submarines in the port city of Kaohsiung.
It has been named the Haikun after a mythical massive fish that can also fly, which appears in classic Chinese literature.
In this video, Defense Updates reports on Taiwan’s first indigenously developed submarine Haikun.
