The United States Navy has commissioned a new Arleigh Burke–class guided-missile destroyer, USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr. (DDG 124), during a formal ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk.
Sailors ceremonially ran aboard the warship as the vessel was brought to life during commissioning event, officially marking its transition into active service. The destroyer is named in honor of a Medal of Honor recipient and retired Marine Corps colonel, and is the first ship to bear Barnum’s name. Notably, he is among the few individuals to have witnessed the commissioning of a vessel named in their honor.

Secretary of the US Navy John C. Phelan stated, “This ship is not symbolic, it is combat power, and today she joins something bigger. The ship and her crew join the President’s Golden Fleet, the Fleet of the future – rebuilding American maritime dominance by putting more capable ships in the water, strengthening our industrial base, and ensuring we can fight tonight and win tomorrow. To be a superpower, one must be a seapower, and USS Harvey C. Barnum Jr. represents exactly what that future looks like.”

Martha Hill, the ship’s sponsor and wife of Harvey C. Barnum Jr., reflected on the crew’s role in bringing the warship to life, stating, “This moment marks the transformation of this ship from steel into something living — a reflection of the spirit, dedication, and strength of the Sailors who will carry her forward.”
