U.S. Marines and naval personnel attached to the USS Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group have entered waters under the jurisdiction of U.S. Central Command, according to an official statement.
The formation, spearheaded by the America-class amphibious assault ship, set sail earlier this month from its forward-deployed base in Sasebo, Japan, and includes the embarked 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit.
Its redeployment toward the Middle East follows reports that U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorized a CENTCOM request for additional forces, aimed at countering escalating Iranian-backed activity in the region.
Designed to function as a forward-deployed expeditionary base for Marine forces, USS Tripoli is set to join other major U.S. naval assets already operating in the region.
